Dr. Berry Discusses Pacific-Asia Institute for Resilience and Sustainability at Third Thursday

The Third Thursday event at the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center featured a talk by Dr. Richard Berry, director of strategic partnerships at U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM)

In the context of Hawaii senate bill 2742, which if approved would establish the Pacific-Asia Institute for Resilience and Sustainability, Berry discussed the need to rethink leadership training and education.

The goal of the institute is to help new leaders learn from emerging trends and meet global challenges through a multi-disciplinary and multi-sector approach to community resilience. The three major areas of focus for the institute would be sustainability and environment (energy, water, food security, and climate change adaptation); global leadership and capacity building (international leadership, disaster risk reduction, and public health systems); and critical community continuity (cyber security, information assurance, security technology business and policy, and security awareness).

A large group of NDPTC partners, staff, instructors, and friends participated in a lively discussion with Berry and enjoyed pau hana afterwards at NDPTC’s downtown office. An adjunct professor at the University of Hawaii, Berry focuses on Public Private Partnerships and Public Diplomacy with PACOM. He is a former army officer and instructor at the United States Military Academy at West Point, and has worked in strategy development with Smith Barney and Merrill Lynch.
