Dr. Eddie Bernard Receives Community Resilience Award

The National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC) presented the 2014 Community Resiliency Leadership Award to Dr. Eddie Bernard, noted oceanographer and tsunami expert, during the Pacific Risk Management 'Ohana (PRiMO) annual meeting held in Honolulu from March 11-13th. A subject matter expert and instructor with NDPTC, Bernard currently is an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington and Scientist Emeritus for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL). "Every year NDPTC has honored an individual who has made significant contributions to community resilience,” said NDPTC Executive Director Karl Kim during the PRIMO conference. “We've honored community leaders, first responders and emergency managers who share our concerns related to natural hazards, coastal communities and islands and territories. We are so pleased to recognize the many contributions of Eddie Bernard, scientist, oceanographer, renown tsunami expert and close friend of NDPTC." Bernard retired from PMEL in 2010, after 40 years at NOAA directing research programs on ocean climate dynamics, fisheries oceanography, El Niño forecasts, tsunamis, and underwater volcanoes. He also was the director of NOAA’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu for 3 years and was the founding chairman of the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program. In 2010, Bernard received his third Presidential Meritorious Rank Award, in recognition of his transformation of three long-term PMEL research programs in tsunami warning and education, ocean acidification, and ocean exploration into Congressional authorization laws.
