From Refuse to Resource: Land Based Strategies to Address Marine Debris on Oahu
Posted on May 10, 2021
Department of Urban and Regional Planning Spring Practicum led by Dr. Karl Kim
Marine debris takes many forms, including derelict fishing gear and vessels, abandoned recreational equipment, and discarded consumer plastics, metals, rubber, paper, and textiles. Countless consumer items make their way into the ocean every day. If we reduce the amount of waste we produce, we reduce the amount of waste that can potentially become marine debris. A good rule of thumb is to remember the 4 Rs: Refuse, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle.
The University of Hawaii's Department of Urban and Regional Planning Spring 2021 Practicum focused on how to best address marine debris on Oahu. The Spring Practicum, led by Dr. Karl Kim, included Master's Degree students Nicolas Jon Ayabe, Jaeho Choi, Tamara Edwards, and Thomas Stock.
