Memorandum of Agreement Signed Between the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center And Sea Grant College Program of the University of Puerto Rico (Mayagüez Campus)

The National Disaster Preparedness Training Center at the University of Hawaiʻi (NDPTC) and the Sea Grant College Program of the University of Puerto Rico (Mayagüez Campus) (SGPR) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOU).   

 NDTPC and SGPR will work together to deliver natural hazards courses to participants in Puerto Rico with the primary goal of improving education and training to reduce the impacts of natural disasters.

 On behalf of the Sea Grant College Program of the University of Puerto Rico (Mayagüez Campus), Chancellor Dr. John Fernández Van Cleve signed the MOU.  The MOU main working contact will be Mr. Ruperto Chaparro, SGPR Director.

 The MOU outlines how NDTPC and SGPR are joined by a “common mission to improve preparedness, relief and recovery of communities affected by disasters”.

 Both organizations will work together in the “spirit of cooperation and open communication, consistent with law, with the primary goal of improving education and training to reduce the impacts of disasters”.

 Since the beginning of the 1980’s, Sea Grant has operated through the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez and Humacao Campuses.

 SGPR's educational program is dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of coastal and marine resources in Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and the Caribbean region, as well to tend the needs of capacity building in Climate Extension. 

 Sea Grant's mission is to enhance the practical use and conservation of coastal, marine and Great Lakes resources in order to create a sustainable economy and environment. Sea Grant’s work is based on collaborations with universities, industries, governmental agencies, and resource users. Environmental stewardship, long-term economic development and responsible use of America’s coastal, ocean and Great Lakes resources are at the heart of Sea Grant’s mission. A network of 33 Sea Grant programs in the coastal US States and territories carries out this mission through research, extension and education activities.
