NDPTC Coastal Engineering and Planning Specialist presents at International Congress of Coastal and Marine Tourism

Rob Porro, NDPTC Coastal Planning and Engineering Specialist, presented research related to erosion management in Waikiki at the recent International Congress on Coastal and Marine Tourism held in Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i from November 9-13, 2015.  Titled “Evaluating erosion management strategies under future sea level rise in Waikiki, Hawai‘i”, the research compares beach nourishment with managed retreat and coastal armoring in terms of their suitability to combat beach erosion in Waikiki under rising sea levels.  The International Congress on Coastal and Marine Tourism is a gathering of coastal managers, researchers, students, and tourism professionals to discuss and share knowledge relevant to tourism in coastal and marine areas.  Hosted by the College of Social Sciences at the University of  Hawai‘i at Mānoa, the congress included topics ranging from sustainable tourism development, resilience of tourism destinations, management of marine resources, to the impact of climate change on the tourism industry.
