Owen Shieh presentation at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center

Owen Shieh, NDPTC’s Weather & Climate Program Coordinator, was invited to give a presentation to the U.S. Navy sailors and U.S. Air Force airmen at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on 19 March 2014

The JTWC is the task force of U.S. Pacific Command charged with forecasting and warning for tropical cyclones across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, an area that encompasses approximately 89% of the world’s tropical cyclone activity. Although JTWC’s forecast mission is only to support U.S. Government and Department of Defense interests, its tropical cyclone warnings sets the standard for data archives that are used by meteorologists and researchers around the world.

Prior to full-time work with NDPTC, Owen was trained as a Typhoon Duty Officer research assistant at the JTWC, and he now continues the collaboration on behalf of the NDPTC. While NDPTC develops and delivers training courses for our nation’s emergency managers and first responders, collaborations such as those with JTWC are important to maintain an understanding of the cutting-edge scientific operations that allow us to better prepare for hazardous weather.

Owen spoke about his previous field research experiences; the typhoon research that he is conducting through cooperation with the University of Hawaii, NOAA, and the JTWC; and gave an overview of the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium as well as NDPTC’s current training course offerings. His talk concluded with a motivational message that stressed the importance of tropical meteorology and its attendant hazards on the developing world.
