// Course Description

Course Title: Tsunami Awareness (AWR-217)
Status: FEMA Certified. This course is now listed in the FEMA National Training and Education Division (NTED) Catalog.
Description:

Tsunamis are low frequency, high consequence natural hazard events. Tsunamis can cause great loss of life and property damage. This course presents the tsunami hazard, current hazard assessment tools and products, tsunami warning and dissemination of systems, and effective community response and tsunami risk reduction strategies.
This course is designed to enhance the participants’ abilities to support their organizational preparedness and response efforts.  At the conclusion of the course, a scenario-based group activity challenges participants to identify effective actions that help reduce the impacts of a tsunami hazard in their community.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the basics of tsunami science and the tools for tsunami hazard assessment
  • Describe the tsunami alert and warning process
  • Apply tsunami tools, methodology and processes to improve organizational tsunami preparedness and response efforts
  • Apply their knowledge of materials covered to at-risk tsunami communities impacted by a tsunami event
  • Describe the tsunami warning process and the importance of drills

Max Enrollment: 30 - 40 participants
Test Requirements:
  • Pre-test to be completed PRIOR to the course. Assists to assess familiarity with the course subject material.
  • Post test to be completed at completion of course. To receive a FEMA issued Certificate of Completion, a post test score of at least 70% must be obtained.
Costs: The cost of developing and delivering training is covered by a cooperative agreement with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). There is no cost to the individual for taking the course. we do not cover the cost of travel or lodging to attend training.
