Course Description

Description:

The United States ranks third, behind Indonesia and Japan, in the number of active volcanoes. Participants will gain an understanding of the complex factors that influence volcanic crises: the hazards, vulnerabilities, impacts, and risks and the tools and processes that support monitoring, forecasts, warnings, preparedness, mitigation, and response. No advanced knowledge or experience of volcanoes is required.

This course is designed to enhance the abilities of participants to support their organizations’ preparedness and response efforts for future volcanic crises. It provides an understanding of the processes, impacts, and causes of volcanic hazards. Participants will come to understand how organizational preparedness and community-level planning support mitigation of volcanic hazard.

In the final module, participants will take part in a facilitator-led, scenario-based group activity that challenges them to identify effective actions that will reduce the impact of a volcanic crisis in their communities. In these activities, participants apply their knowledge of the presented materials to actual preparedness, mitigation, and response issues. Through these exercises they come to understand how organizational preparedness and community-level planning support the mitigation of volcanic hazards.
