// Course Description

Course Title: Coastal Hazards Awareness - WBT
Status: This course is currently pending FEMA Certification.
Description:

With over 95,000 miles of coastline, coastal hazards regularly impact a significant portion of the country. These areas exposed to coastal hazards also consist of almost half of the nation’s population and a large share of the country’s economic activity and development. With storm surge, tsunami, erosion, and elevated water levels threatening all coastal states and territories, this course can provide valuable knowledge and tools applicable throughout the country. 

This two-hour awareness-level web-based training aims to increase awareness of the hazards facing coastal communities and basic strategies to reduce the risk to those hazards. This course provides training on the basic science of, assessment of, and preparedness for natural hazards and risks that uniquely affect coastal communities. Examples of these hazards are short term events such as high surf, storm surge, and tsunami inundation, or long-term threats from  coastal erosion.

  • Identify risks posed by coastal hazards 
  • Describe important characteristics affecting coastal zone vulnerability  that contribute to vulnerability to harm

Max Enrollment: 30 - 40 participants
Test Requirements:
  • Pre-test to be completed PRIOR to the course. Assists to assess familiarity with the course subject material.
  • Post test to be completed at completion of course. To receive a FEMA issued Certificate of Completion, a post test score of at least 70% must be obtained.
Costs: The cost of developing and delivering training is covered by a cooperative agreement with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). There is no cost to the individual for taking the course. we do not cover the cost of travel or lodging to attend training.
